What to do with an old photocopier
An old copier is heavy, awkward and in the way. Here are the options, in the order most people should think about them.
1. Check who owns it
If it is on a lease, rental or managed print contract, it goes back to the provider. Check your agreement before you do anything else. See end of lease options.
2. Does it still work?
A machine that works well and is still wanted may be worth selling. A machine that is faulty may still have value for parts. The only way to know is to ask for a price from the model and the status page.
3. Your options
- Sell it. You get paid and someone else deals with the machine. We buy used A3 commercial office copiers, and you can ask for a price.
- Trade it in. If you are buying a new machine from a dealer, ask what they will allow. Compare it with a price from a buyer.
- Keep it as a spare. It only makes sense if you have the space and the machine is in good order.
- Donate it. A school or charity may accept it, but check that they can service it and supply toner before you give it away.
- Recycle it. If it has no value, use a recycler that handles electronic waste. It may cost you, and you should clear the data first.
4. Clear the data either way
Whatever you decide, clear the data before the machine leaves. See clearing data before you sell a copier.
Questions
Is it worth selling an old copier?
Sometimes, and sometimes not. A price from the model and a photo of the status page tells you quickly, and asking is free.
Can I just put it out for council collection?
Often not. Copiers are large electronic items, and councils often have rules about them. Check with your council, and clear the data first.
